Brandon Gene Roland
What you prefer to be called:
Director of Youth Ministries
When did you start at First UMC:
September 1, 2017
What are the main things you do at FUMC:
I develop the youth of the church (grades 6 through 12) to be disciples for Christ and to be an example for all those they come in contact with on a day-to-day basis. I plan and prepare a calendar year of events and Bible studies for the youth group. The more consistent youth bible studies include topical discussions and studies on Wednesday evenings from 6:30PM to 7:30PM, discipleship training on Sunday evenings from 4:00PM to 5:30PM, and an in-depth Bible study in Sunday School on Sunday mornings starting at 9:30AM. I also plan events, trips, and ministry opportunities for the youth.
I am also the Director of Upward Sports here at First United Methodist Church. I plan out the Upward Evaluations, practice schedules, game schedules and the timeline for the basketball season. I draft the teams, order the supplies and equipment needed for the upcoming season. I also help recruit and schedule times for volunteers who help coach basketball and cheerleading, referee, help with concessions, devotions, and announcers.
I also am very active in our Young Adult Sunday School Class. We are a collective group from college aged students to those who are young adults or young at heart. We help organize our once a month contemporary time of worship during Sunday School before our regular church service at 10:50AM. I help find guest speakers or speak myself during that time, find the contemporary worship songs, and help set and clean up during that time.
Who are the key volunteers that you work with on a regular basis:
My amazing wife – BJ Roland
My right hand man - Wes McKinney
My muscle – Corey Mann
And the two most active college students who helps out a lot are – Isaac Mick and Cole Hollifield
Tell us about your family:
I was born and raised here in Princeton, WV. My dad, Barry Roland, is a retired coal miner and my mom, Shelia Roland, wore many hats – stay at home mom, babysitter, caterer, etc. I have an older sister, Marsha, an older brother, Adam, and a little sister, Brooke. I grew up here in Princeton, WV and my parents raised me in church. They taught me the importance of hard work, detail in the work all while loving others. I grew up in a youth group that reflected that same mentality of how to serve others as Christ would while loving as Christ would.
On June 7, 2015, I was blessed to marry my incredible, amazing and beautiful best friend BJ Price Roland. She has been and always will be my support through this youth ministry. She grew up here at First United Methodist Church and she is excited to help give back and be involved with this ministry and help give back to the church that made such an impact on her life growing up. I am also blessed because I became a part of her family and gained some pretty incredible in-laws: Ray and Sherrie Price, Kristine Price, John and Susan Hatchett.
I am thankful that I get to serve my hometown and this community beside of not only my church family but my family as well.
